The mining of limestone and processing it into cement began in the Hudson River Valley, dating back to the pre-Revolutionary period. Abandoned quarries and manufacturing plants are part of the landscape on both sides of the Hudson River. Cement from this region, known as Rosendale Cement or natural cement, figured in the building of many structures throughout North America. Most of the photographs below were taken in former factories in Cementon, NY.
